Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam on Friday opened a new pier in a town in a curious corner of Hong Kong. Sha Tau Kok is a small town, where the border between Hong Kong and mainland China blurs.

It is officially a "frontier closed area" and it's usually out of bounds to all Hong Kong residents, apart from the people who live there. If you are not a resident, you have to get a special permit to enter.

Authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong say they are planning to develop Hong Kong's rural "New Territories districts", to try to make Hong Kong part of a "Greater Bay Area" together with mainland China's Guangdong Province.
