China's Xi Jinping meets with UN chief Guterres

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in Beijing to discuss global issues such as the coronavirus pandemic and world development on Saturday.

Xi told Guterres that China had already fulfilled its commitment of offering two billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines to the world. He also expressed strong support for the UN's goal of vaccinating 70% of the world population by the end of 2022, and said that China would increase assistance to developing countries.  

Both Xi and Guterres had attended the opening ceremony of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics held the previous night. Guterres congratulated China on its hosting of the Games, and said he also appreciated China's effort in the battle against the pandemic.
