Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido visited an impoverished neighbourhood of Caracas on Thursday, rallying with dozens of supporters calling for them to vote on an opposition referendum next weekend.

The official party won a majority of the seats in the National Assembly during last weekend's election. With the loss, Guaido is expected to finish his term as President of the National Assembly in January, but the opposition lawmakers seek to maintain their roles.

The referendum will ask Venezuelans at home and abroad to say whether they wish to end Nicolás Maduro's rule and hold fresh presidential and legislative elections.

According to analysts, Guaido has lost much of the people's support since he proclaimed himself interim president before a crowd of thousands, on January 23, 2019.
