U.S. COVID-19 cases surpass 1.97 million, according to Johns Hopkins University

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the United States topped 1.97 million on Tuesday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University. At 16:33 EST on Tuesday, the national death toll of COVID-19 rose to 111,751, with the hardest-hit New York State reporting 30,458 deaths, according to the CSSE.

The United States continued to lead the world in the number of confirmed cases and deaths, followed by Brazil and Russia. Tests for the novel coronavirus have been recommended for those participating in the protests in several regions of the United States. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo also expressed hope that thousands of local protesters would be tested, as he is concerned that New York City will see another peak of infection due to the protests.
