More than 100,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported globally each day for the past five days, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) said at an online press conference from the organization's headquarters in Geneva on Wednesday.

The director-general also said WHO will continue to work with its offices across the world to monitor the pandemic and to support countries to deal with the virus, and will continue to provide the world with updated guidance of coping with COVID-19.

As a colleague of the director-general, WHO Health Emergencies Program Executive Director urged the countries to widely use masks to prevent and control the spread of the virus, and WHO, as a way of support, will update guidance on mask use. As of 14:35 Central European Summer Time on Wednesday, a total of 6.2 million confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 379,000 deaths, were reported to WHO.
