The sounds of banging pots and pans were heard across skyscrapers in Brazil's biggest cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday. Brazilians took to their balconies and windows to protest against President Jair Bolsonaro's handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

Bolsonaro held an afternoon news conference on Wednesday with ministers to announce emergency measures to contain the virus and maintain the economy, including assistance for poorer families and support for a struggling aviation industry. Brazil this week reported its first fatality from COVID-19. Confirmed coronavirus cases more than doubled over the past three days to 291 on Tuesday, according to the Health Ministry.
