


A workshop on case study of the driving under influence of alcohol was held in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday.
Organized by Myanmar Traffic Police and HEINEKEN Myanmar, the workshop aimed to share some research findings of HEINEKEN Myanmar and to raise awareness on no drink driving in Myanmar.
Deputy Director General, Road Transportation Administration Department, Nay Linn said “Although we mean no drink driving, some are think that they can drive even though they are drunk. If so, the risks can be raised for the drivers as well as its passengers. That is a really danger. As the awareness, we are going to practice for the drivers to say no drink when driving. Relating these matters, we have roundtable discussions as well. The officials from Myanmar Traffic Police and Road Transportation Administration Department are going to implement vehicles awareness in collaboration with HEINEKEN Myanmar.”
The HEINEKEN researched about drink driving by collecting survey in Yangon Region, Mandalay Region, Mawlamyine and Taunggyi Townships. They collected the surveys by interviewing over a thousand drivers from those regions.
Corporate Affairs Director, HEINEKEN Myanmar Ltd., Ms. Holly Bostock said “The aim of today workshop is firstly to share information; we’ve completed the research but now is about discussion and sharing some of the facts and findings with different people, with the government, with enforcement agencies, also with some NGOs. Because when we all understand this research, we can help to make better policy decisions, enforcement decisions and also education campaign. We can find the real insight that will help improve behavior.”
According to HEINEKEN survey, there are around 83% of researched drivers drink and drive. 82% of them said that they do it because they have good driving skills. That’s why, the officials said the education and awareness programs need to be conducted more to reduce drink driving behavior.
