Tens of thousands of Peruvians turned out in the streets of Lima on Friday to protest an upcoming Constitutional Court ruling that could see a ban on bullfighting and cockfighting in this Andean country, according to local media. The court, which is expected to debate the issue on Tuesday, will rule on whether animal welfare laws extend to the cultural practices of bullfighting and cockfighting.
Bullfighting was introduced to Peru by the Spaniards in 1558. Peru is one of only a handful of countries where bullfighting is still legal. Parts of Spain like Catalonia have already outlawed the practice and in Portugal the bull is not killed in the end.
