



114th anniversary of Yangon Zoo is taking place with the fun fair activities started on Sunday.
The Yangon Zoo is the longest existing zoo in Asia and the second largest zoo in Myanmar, and it was established in 1906, covering an area of nearly 57.7 acres.
For this year anniversary organized by Yangon zoo, many special programs are arranged for three days to attract more visitors to the zoo garden.
Senior Chief Veterinarian, Htoo Zoos & Gardens Business Unit, Myint Thein said “We want public awareness that what is zoo, why keep wild life animals in the zoo and how do link these animals and environment. And we want people to be happy so that we arranged with entertainment programs and of courses educative programs especially for the children. And we have programs like Q&A on the impact when wild life animals are gone.”
People come to zoo for relaxing, enjoying the animal's show, music show and picnic with their friends or family on this public holiday.
The zoo decorated with old-fashioned animal houses and big shady trees draws between 1.2 million to 1.5 million visitors by the years. During the Anniversary days, more visitors come to the zoo than other days to participate in the event.
Visitor, Soe Win Aung said “I came here from Thuwunna with my family. At the same time, today is being my birthday and 114th anniversary of Yangon Zoo; I brought my daughters here to enjoy the entertainment programs. We’ve already visited around here. And I wish Yangon zoo to be eternal existence.”
Visitor, Thi Thi said “ I want my son to participate in the joyful activities on this special day. We’ve p articipated in 100th anniversary of Yangon Zoo as well. And I glad to see the zoo’s development and different themes compared to the previous years.”
Currently, there are hundred species of over 1300 wild life animals in Yangon zoo and the oldest animal species and rare species are showcasing for the people. The officials are trying to transform the existing old fashion zoo to open zoo with international standards.
