Xi signals continuity at China Party Congress

China opened a twice-a-decade Communist Party conference Sunday at which leader Xi Jinping is expected to receive a third five-year term. Xi also said that the coming five years would be a crucial period for China's development and the full-fledged construction of a socialist, modernized country.

His government imposed a national security law imposed on the city that has all but eliminated opposition voices and demands for democracy. He called for faster military development and affirmed that the ruling Communist Party would maintain "absolute leadership" over the military and technology development. At the congress opening session, Xi stressed China's position in to uphold world peace.
