The decade-old world record for the largest football has officially been challenged and shattered in Boston as part of the massive celebrations surrounding the FIFA World Cup.

The massive installation was erected by the Massachusetts Port Authority at Piers Park II along the East Boston waterfront. Mirroring the spirit of the 2013 Doha ball—which was stitched in Sialkot, Pakistan, using regulation synthetic leather materials—the Boston giant structure was engineered to retain the exact geometric paneling and aesthetic proportions of a real, playable football.

Local organizers have paired the giant ball with other regional record-breaking attempts, including a massive community gathering across the river in Cambridge to break the record for the most people simultaneously juggling footballs.
