2025 World Water Day ceremony was held at Myanmar International Convention Center-II in Nay Pyi Taw on 22nd March, with the presence of Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, in his capacity as the Chairman of National Water Resource Committee.
In his speech, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of glaciers which cover 68.7% of world freshwater resource, contributing to drinking water, agriculture, industry and clean energy production. According to the surveys, glaciers across the world have lost a total of 267 billion tons of ice from 2000 to 2019 which leads to increase sea level by 21%.
The study shows that Himalayans have lost glaciers at unprecedented rate over the last 40 years and the ice volume of the region has been reduced dramatically. The experts said over 50 percent volume of the glaciers across the world will lost by 2100 if there were 2 degrees Celsius of warming above preindustrial temperatures.
The United Nations has declared 2025 the International Year of Glaciers Preservation, and announced the 21st March as World Day for Glaciers to raise global awareness about glaciers which plays crucial role in climate, meteorology, economic, social and environmental impacts.
In Myanmar, the glaciers, formed in Mount Hkakaborazi and Tibetan Plateau, flow into Ayeyawaddy River. In order to study the impacts of glaciers on Ayeyawaddy River corridor, the specified water resource information is necessary. Moreover, close monitoring on the changes in glaciers and compiling climate changes data are essential to ensure further systematic water management.
The Prime Minister called for cooperation of entire people for long term sustainability of water sources through systematic water management.
During th ceremony, the winners of 2025 World Water Day commemorative freelance level and amateur level article competitions were awarded and a 2025 World Water Day commemorative video clip was screened in honor of the celebration.
