Some Canberra wine producers have spent the last couple of years planting new wine varieties, they hope will be more tolerant to climate change.
Weather data shows that summers in the capital are getting longer and hotter, affecting the quality of more traditional wines.
As Canberra’s cool climate wine region warms, these vines could produce the wines of the future. Spanish white and red grape varieties planted at Mount Majura vineyard around two years ago, designed to future proof what goes in the bottle. Bureau of Meteorology data shows that average spring temperatures have been rising. Summer now starts sooner and lasts longer.
The effects of climate change have been steadily changing Mount Majura’s wine production.
