Viet Nam is striving to reduce carbon emissions in production, as this endeavor will enable the country to achieve its Net Zero commitment by 2050. Currently, rice production in Viet Nam emits greenhouse gases at a high rate.
The impact from fertilizers and by-products accounts for about 30% of this sector's carbon footprint. To help Viet Nam boost proper fertilizer use, a four-year project led by the US Department of Agriculture, in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Viet Nam and the International Rice Research Institute, will be carried out in six provinces in the Red River Delta and Mekong Delta.
It is estimated to help reduce approximately 56,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually compared to previous levels. Simultaneously, the fertility of rice land will improve due to alternatives to chemical fertilizers.
