The United Nations Mission in South Sudan’s (UNMISS’s) new Chief hosted her very first Joint Verification and Monitoring Mechanism (JVMM) meeting in Juba on 3 Jun.

The JVMM is a part of the Ministry of Defence of the Government of South Sudan. This body was formed so that the South Sudan Peoples Defence Forces (SSPDF) and UNMISS could interact and facilitate the free movement of the UN and the deployment of UNMISS peacekeepers where necessary.

These meetings are held on a regular basis so that UNMISS and South Sudanese authorities can bilaterally manage security issues in conflict zones, facilitate force protection teams, coordinate humanitarian clearances and access for the delivery of lifesaving aid and to build trust amongst each other.
