Thai authorities on Wednesday warned of possible serious floods in Bangkok and central areas, ahead of expected heavy seasonal rainfall through the rest of the week.

The situation is worsened by a large volume of water moving down from flooding in the north of the country and from discharges from brimful dams. Authorities said to cope with the situation, they have used sandbags to fence riverbanks, prepared water pumps at drainage tunnels, and had military trucks on standby to transport commuters.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigations said at least 22 provinces with more than 41,000 households remained affected by flooding with conditions improved in a few cities like Chiang Mai.
