Syrian government forces have recaptured more than 600 square kilometres of territory so far in a campaign to seize control of the last rebel strongholds of Idlib and the Aleppo countryside, a spokesperson from Syria's armed forces said on Sunday. The government offensive in Idlib, the last major enclave of opposition to President Bashar al-Assad, has driven more than half a million people from their homes towards the closed Turkish border.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based war monitor, said on Saturday that 430 Turkish military vehicles had crossed into Idlib in the last 24 hours. Turkey has reinforced its military presence in Idlib, saying the advances by Syrian troops and their allies threaten a fresh humanitarian disaster.
