In a moment of unity, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and Thailand have jointly nominated the kebaya for the UN's prestigious intangible cultural heritage list, with a decision expected in 2024. The kebaya is a traditional dress for women in Southeast Asia. Suited to hot tropical weather, the intricately embroidered blouse is usually long-sleeved, and ranges from loose-fitting to semi-transparent, figure-hugging cuts.
Yeo Kirk Siang, senior official, Singapore National Heritage Board said "The kebaya is a traditional women's garment that became very popular in this region in the 19th and 20th centuries, because of trade because of movement of people. And because of that there was a kind of fusion of cultures, influences, and different communities that brought about their own kebayas, and also incorporated their own cultural identities in it." Putri Nadirah Hassan, Singaporean kebaya designer "There's a growing popularity to wear the kebaya during formal functions such as weddings and family occasions as well.
Interestingly, a lot of the younger crowd are adopting and proudly wearing the kebaya during their graduations as well, as an homage to their roots." A kebaya can cost as little as 7 USD for a simple, machine-made design, to around 1,200 USD for a more intricate handmade piece.
