South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Tuesday Japan and South Korea should overcome historical grievances and improve relations for future generations. Moon made the remark in a ceremony commemorating the 103rd anniversary of the Korean independence movement.

In his last attendance in the annual ceremony as a president, Moon has emphasized the need for the two countries to resolve historical issues which caused years of bitter feud between Seoul and Tokyo.  He urged Japan to cooperate with his government for the future.

South Korea and Japan have been struggling to repair relations that sank to their lowest point in decades in 2019 following South Korean court rulings that ordered Japanese companies to pay reparations to Koreans who were forced to work in their factories during World War II.
