Senegal president launches new party, finalising rupture with PM

Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has launched a new political party, Kiiraay, following a split with his former ally and former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.

Faye introduced the party, whose name means “protection” or “shield” in Wolof, during a gathering of supporters in Dakar on Saturday. He said the new movement would focus on the role of the republic and national institutions.
