The second community isolation and treatment facility built in Hong Kong by the Chinese central government was unveiled on Tuesday.

The 2,800-bed facility was completed in San Tin after 15 days of intensive construction. The country’s medical system has been overwhelmed in recent days by a surge in coronavirus cases. More than 500,000 infections and 2,365 deaths have been recorded since the fifth wave began at the end of December, with many of the victims among the unvaccinated elderly.

Hong Kong's Chief Secretary for Administration, John Lee, inspected the facilities and thanked the central government for helping Hong Kong. The first Beijing-built community isolation and treatment facility was officially put into use in Tsing Yi on March 1, providing 3,900 beds after a week of intensive construction.
