SDG Report 2022: Monitoring to achieve the 2030 agenda

The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2022 that was monitored for global progress on the 2030 agenda was launched on 7th July.

This annual SDG progress report was prepared by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs-UN DESA in collaboration with the entire UN Statistical System, consisting of more than 50 international and regional agencies.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals and were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The report is 2.3 million data observations from Member States, which are also housed in the Global SDG Indicator Database.

Yongyi Min, Chief, SDG Monitoring Section, UN DESA said “Timely, high-qualified and disaggregated data can help how trigger more targeted responses and also anticipate future needs and also how in design of urgent needed actions. In order to involve stronger from the crises and prepare for the unknown challenges ahead we really call for statistically environment should be prioritized on the national government and also for international communities.”

The report said that the pandemic wiped out more than four years of progress on poverty eradication and pushed 93 million more people into extreme poverty in 2020. 

Francesca Perucci, Assistant Director, Statistics Division, UN DESA said “We have seen that is very evidence in incident in the case of progress in poverty. There were very good trend to observe until 2018, 2019 and pandemic more than four years of progress, were completed wiped out and pushing 93 million more people into extreme poverty in 2020. Now, we look at the projection, the numbers of people we believe in living in extreme poverty 2022, we see that additional 75 to 95 million more people living in extreme poverty compared with the projection that we have before the pandemic hit.”

The report said disrupted essential health services resulted in a drop in immunization coverage for the first time in a decade and a rise in deaths from tuberculosis and malaria. More than 24 million learners from pre-primary to university level are at risk of never returning to school. The report also highlighted areas that need urgent actions in order to rescue the SDGs and deliver meaningful progress for people and the planet by 2030.
