Satellite images show scale of Tonga eruption

Satellite images showed the massive scale of Saturday's undersea volcanic eruption in the Pacific that sent tsunami waves to the island nation of Tonga and sparked evacuation warnings from Chile to Japan.  The eruption that took place Saturday evening, with a plume of ash, steam and gas rising like a mushroom above the blue Pacific waters.

A 1.2 metre-high tsunami wave was recorded in Amami, a southern Japanese island, around midnight Saturday. A tsunami alert initially issued for the region and northern prefecture of Iwate has since been downgraded with dozens of people have evacuated their homes. Japan is about 8,000 kilometers northwest of Tonga. Tsunami warnings also disrupted transportation in affected areas.
