Road Safety: VSG addresses Council’s first meeting

The National Road Safety Council [NRSC] held its first meeting on Friday afternoon at the Ministry of Transport and Communications in Nay Pyi Taw.

In his address, Chairman of the National Road Safety Council Vice Chairman of the State Administration Council [SAC] Deputy Prime Minister Vice Senior General Soe Win stressed implementation of the National Road Safety Action Plan (2021-2030) and importance of public cooperation.

Among the 100,000 people in the world, the death rate due to traffic accidents is 18.2% and the highest death rate is in Africa and Southeast Asia. Across the world, among the causes of people's death, death due to road accidents ranks 8th and it is the number one cause of death among young adults.

All over the world, the issue of road safety has come to be taken seriously in the second decade. The United Nations has established the Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020) based on the Moscow Declaration. Similarly, in ASEAN countries, the ASEAN Regional Road Safety Strategic Plan has been formulated and is being implemented.

The Decade of Action for Road Safety covers Road Safety Management, Safer Road and Mobility, Safety Vehicles, Safer Road Users and Post-Crash Response.

In Myanmar, the NRSC has to continue implementation of the Myanmar National Road Safety Action Plan (2021-2030) by taking into account of 5Es System-Education, Engineering, Enforcement, Emergency Medical Care and Evaluation.

The Vice Senior General also stressed 7s- Strategy, Structure, Skills, Shared, Systems, Staff and Style and urged attendees to implement action plan, Quick-Win programmes, cooperation with international communities and turn out road safety plans suitable with the country.

The target is in the year 2030, to reduce the number of deaths to 50 percent which the year of 2019 faced. This meeting continued with attendees discussing road safety measures, reports, ongoing works and plans and making suggestions. The Vice Senior General coordinated the discussions and suggestions.
