The Tatmadaw retook control of Naungcho, a strategic town in Shan State (North), on July 16 from TNLA and PDF terrorist groups, after months of intense fighting.

The TNLA and PDF had launched coordinated attacks on the town since June 2024, aiming to destabilize government mechanisms by targeting local battalions and administrative units, destroying residential areas, and looting public property.

As a result of these destructive actions, many local residents were forced to flee their homes and take shelter in temporary camps or with relatives. Starting on August 10, 2024, TNLA, Mandalay PDF, and Danu PDF intensified their offensive in the Taung Kham and Bant Bway areas, as well as along the Pyin Oo Lwin–Mogok road, using villagers as human shields.

In response, the Tatmadaw launched counter-terrorism operations involving coordinated ground and air strikes beginning August 25. Strategic routes were regained on February 28, 2025. With support from local people, the Tatmadaw regained full control of four key areas by July after fierce clashes.

Over the 11-month operation, there were 20 major battles and 566 firefights with the terrorists, during which 171 bodies and 166 weapons and assorted ammunition were seized. Tatmadaw columns are working to safely assist displaced residents in returning to Naungcho and restoring government functions as quickly as possible.

In line with the Geneva Conventions, priority is being given to clearing landmines left behind by terrorist groups. Restoration efforts, including repairs to schools, hospitals, offices, religious buildings, and homes damaged by the terrorists, are being carried out in cooperation with local communities. Security measures in the area have also been strengthened.
