The Australian state of New South Wales reported 16 deaths from covid-19 on Sunday who all were above 60 years old. Just over 30,000 new cases were reported in Australia's most populous state, forcing those people to join more than 200,000 others in isolation.

Dominic Perrottet, New South Wales Premier said "It's a very difficult day for our state. Over the last 24 hours, we've had 16 people who've died from the virus. "If you haven't received that first dose vaccination, please go and get vaccinated. The numbers don't lie. If we look at ICU numbers, if we look at hospitalization numbers, there is no doubt, there is no doubt, it is very clear that vaccination is key to keeping you safe."

An intensive care specialist said many of those currently receiving intensive care had been infected by the delta variant of the coronavirus.
