Providing Assistance : Rescue and relief operation in Laymyethna Township

Ayeyawady Region Chief Minister U Aye Kyaw, together with officials, visited flood-affected people in Laymyethna Township on Thursday. They encouraged the residents and provided rice, cooking oil, clean drinking water and food supplies.

The Chief Minister also met and encouraged personnel from the military, police, fire services, health department and Red Cross who are helping with rescue and relief operations, and presented them with honoraria. The heavy rain triggered flooding in Laymhethna Township of Hinthada District, causing the damage to Ngawun River embankment.

About 39,000 people from over 9,000 households in five wards, 138 villages, from Laymyethna Township were affected by the floods. 17 relief camps were opened to evacuate the affected communities. The regional government, government departments, social organizations and donors are continuing relief and support efforts.

Free fuel is also being provided to vehicles involved in rescue operations, while plans are being made for rehabilitation after the floodwaters recede.

Officials, security personnel and local residents are working around the clock to close damaged sections of an embankment and stop floodwater from flowing into the area. Health officials also gave advice on preventing diarrhea, food poisoning and snake bites, and provided health care to flood victims.
