Practice of Thanakha Culture in Myanmar: Efforts underway for submission to the UNESCO

As the government is implementing to submit “Practice of Thanakha Culture in Myanmar” to the Intangible Cultural Heritage List of UNESCO, plans are underway to  organize campaigns on the Practice of Thanakha Culture in Magwe Region.

On 7th March, a work coordination meeting was held at the regional government office with the attendence of Chief Minster U Tint Lwin and officials.

At the meeting, the Chief Minister said in Myanmar, applying Thanakha on the face and feeding it to children are the customs of Myanmar people that has been existed since ancient times. He added that Thanakha is being cherished not only by ethnic people residing in Myanmar but also the delightes of people from other religions. He pointed out that murals of Thanakha grinding ladies at SuTaungPyae Pagoda in Saku Town are the evidences for Myanmar’s Thanakha culture, and these evidences were submitted to the UNESCO as the supporting references.

Moveover, Tabodwe Fullmoon Day is designated as “Myanma Thanakha Day”, preserving the Intangible cultural heritage. He urged all to participate in dicussion to submit Practice of Thanakha Culture in Myanmar to UNESCO successfully. The attendees discussed the facts in supports of the submission of Myanmar’s Thanakha culture to the UNESCO.
