Paper Reading Session: Waziya Cinema: Heritage of Arts passed multi era

Paper reading session held under the title, “Waziya Cinema: Heritage of Arts passed the Multi Era” took place at Sarso Beikman in Yangon on June 16th. Union Minister for Information U Htein Lin attended the event together with the Rector of the National University of Arts and Culture (NUAC), Director U Kyi Soe Tun and concerned officials. 

Rector, Dr. Kay Thi Htwe, NUAC said " The paper reading session is held as part of upgrading of the cinema into a red carpet theater. The paper reading session also aims to showcased the historically evidence of the cinema that hosted music, theatrical, film and drama performances. In this paper reading session, I read paper under the title “Waziya Cinema: Multi-Purpose Arts Venue”. 

Waziya Cinema is a movie theater but also as a multi-purpose venue for theatrical performances, puppetry, dance, music concerts, forums, meetings, training schools, studios, and other creative arts. With French style bold art architectural design, the cinema was built about 1920 and showed many renowned films not only in Myanmar movies but also from the abroad starting from 1923.

Director, Kyaw Lin Oo, Myanmar Narrative Think Tank said "I was invited to this paper reading session as a chair. For me, attending this event is a great chance to observe all the history of the cinema and Myanmar’s film industry. Through this event, people can widely know the background history of the cinema so also the other historical landmarks in Yangon."

Swe Zin Htaik, Actress said "For the paper reading session, I chose the title: ‘Past Light and Today’s Heritage’ with the aim to connect past and future of the cinema that plays an international ambassador of the film sector. I also believe that the Waziya Cinema as a center of cinematic program that can introduce creative activities and value-added culture of Myanmar movies to the world in this digital era.

Waziya Cinema is a multi-purpose venue with a strong historical background of hosting commemorative events including paying respect ceremonies to elder artists and 100th anniversary of the Myanmar film industry. Collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Myanmar Motion Picture Organization, the cinema was upgraded and preserved as an international-standard Red Carpet Theatre. As the Waziya Cinema is one of the historical landmarks of Myanmar’s Film industry, citizens are urged to preserve and promote the standard of Myanmar Motion Picture Business in the future.
