The opening ceremony of the Painting Art Exhibition of "Mekong-Lancang Cultural Program (2024) Myanmar", organized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture and the National University of Culture and Arts (Yangon) under the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund (2024) Program, was held at Bagan Archaeological Museum in Nyaung-U District, Bagan Township of Mandalay Region on February 25.

The ceremony was attended by Mandalay Region Chief Minister U Myo Aung, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture Daw Nu Mra Zan along with relevant officials, Mandalay Region Government Social Affairs Minister, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Myanmar Ms. Ma Jia, rectors from the National University of Culture and Arts in Yangon and Mandalay, artists from Mekong-Lancang member countries, and other attendees. The Chief Minister, Deputy Minister, and officials officially opened the painting exhibition by cutting the ribbon.

In his opening speech, the Mandalay Region Chief Minister stated that the event was organized with the objectives of protecting, preserving, and safeguarding the traditional paintings of Mekong region member countries—Myanmar, China, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam—while fostering mutual trust and strengthening friendly relations. He further noted that such events would enhance interaction and collaboration among young artists, leading to greater opportunities for cooperation.

Following the ceremony, the Chief Minister, Deputy Minister, and officials toured the exhibition, which featured 29 freestyle paintings by 28 artists, along with 26 outdoor paintings. These works, displayed in watercolor, oil, acrylic, and digital artwork mediums, showcased the historical and artistic value of Bagan’s stunning landscapes, including outdoor paintings depicting its scenic beauty. The officials viewed and appreciated the exhibits.

Artists from the Mekong member countries—China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam—participated in various activities within the Bagan Cultural Zone, including on-site painting, presenting papers on traditional painting arts, exhibiting their works, and conducting cultural study tours. These four main activities are scheduled to take place from February 23 to 27. The opening ceremony was held on the morning of February 24, followed by a dinner event in the evening.

Subsequently, the Chief Minister and officials visited the Tharapa Gate in Old Bagan Town to inspect the progress of renovation and construction work. They listened to explanations from responsible officials and provided guidance to address any outstanding needs.

After that, they inspected the construction of a multipurpose hall, where officials briefed the Chief Minister on the building’s completion status, interior and exterior progress, and plans for remaining tasks. The Chief Minister offered instructions to fulfill necessary requirements and continued to oversee the project’s development, it’s reported.
