OpenAI said it was introducing a new version of ChatGPT for users under 18, with additional safety protections. The US developer announced ChatGPT for Teens on Tuesday.

OpenAI said users would automatically be placed into the teen version if its system estimates they are under 18 or if they state they are between 13 and 17 years old. The system restricts conversations involving higher-risk topics, including self-harm, eating disorders, and explicit sexual or graphic content.

Its study mode is designed to guide students through problems step by step using questions and other support, rather than simply giving them answers. OpenAI said it would continue developing features to help teens benefit from AI. It also said it would measure and publish what it learns from the service.
