Ongoing tasks of Upper Kengtawng Hydropower Plant: It’s set to be completed at the end of 2024

The Upper Kengtawng Hydropower Plant, about 14 miles southwest of Kengtawng Township in Shan State (South), has been implemented with Union budget fund since the 2008-2009 FY and 76.85 percent of the work undertakings has been completed as of the end of May 2023.

According to an official from Department of Hydro-power Implementation under the Ministry of Electric Power, the hydropower project is targeted to be completed by 82.76% by the end of the 2023-2024 FY and efforts are being made to complete all tasks by 100% at the end of 2024 and generate electricity by March 2025.

Department of Hydro-power Implementation, Ministry of Electric Power, Responsible Official said "At the end of the 2023-2024 FY, it is targeted to complete this hydropower project by 82.76. Among the ongoing tasks of the upper Kengtawng Hydropower Project, 83.42% of the spillway, 93.92% of the diversion tunnel, and 19.18% of the power plant have been completed. To complete all the work undertakings in time, construction processes are being carried out with union budget fund annually."

Upon completion of the project, the upper Kengtawng Hydropower Project with an installed capacity of 51 MW can generate 267 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually  and will be transmitted electricity via  the national power grid throughout Myanmar, including the townships of Shan State (South). And also, about 7million people in Myanmar enable to access more electricity and the socio-economic status of the local residents within project area will be further developed.

The Department of Hydro-power Implementation under the Ministry of Electric Power is providing technical assistance and advices for this project to private investors and Region/State governments as much as possible. Efforts are being made to produce more hydropower and implementation tasks are being carried out with least impact on the natural and social environment.
