Nuclear Energy Implementation: President addresses meeting in Nay Pyi Taw

The meeting of the National Steering Committee on Nuclear Energy Implementation was held on the afternoon of September 23 at the meeting hall of the Office of the President in Nay Pyi Taw, where U Min Aung Hlaing, President and Chairman of the National Steering Committee on Nuclear Energy Implementation, delivered the opening address.

First, the President and Chairman of the National Steering Committee on Nuclear Energy Implementation stated in his opening remarks that with the rising demand for electricity, global energy security, and the need to reduce carbon emissions, many countries around the world are refocusing on the role of nuclear energy.

He added that Myanmar also needs to systematically study and evaluate the role of nuclear energy for its long-term energy requirements. He emphasized that in implementing the peaceful use of nuclear energy, priority must be given to the 3Ss - Safety, Security, and Safeguards and a firm set of basic principles must be established.

Regarding Myanmar's current activities, he stated that the country is working within the framework of the IAEA for the peaceful application of atomic energy. He also highlighted ongoing efforts with ROSATOM, the state corporation of the Russian Federation, for nuclear technology development, human resource development, and enhancing positive public perceptions toward nuclear technology.

Next, Dr. Myo Thein Kyaw, Secretary of the National Steering Committee on Nuclear Energy Implementation and Union Minister for Science and Technology, presented details regarding the implementation of nuclear energy activities. Afterward, the Union Ministers who are committee members briefed the meeting on the implementation progress according to their respective subcommittees.

In his closing remarks, the President stated that Myanmar's nuclear energy development journey is an undertaking carried out for the national interest; therefore, the designated ministries must systematically implement their respective responsibilities step by step for National Nuclear Infrastructure Development.
