








Plans are underway to set up a National Geopark at Mount Popa. Myanmar Geosciences Society proposed 16 Geosites in the forest area of Mount Popal to be established as the very first National Geopark of the country.
In order to establish the internationally recognized UNESCO Global Geopark, it needs to establish the National Geopark in the initial phase.
On 26th February, Chairman of the Geopark Working Committee Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Min Min Oo and officials made field trip to the propose Geosites in Kyaukpadaung Township of Mandalay Region.
The Deputy Minister said the Ministry is carrying out the tasks for conservation of natural resources for long term maintenance. Nature Reserve Areas have been designated for the bio diversities, ecosystem and significant geosites.
He said Mount Popa area is very crucial for cultural and geological aspects of the country. The Deputy Minister and party later inspected Sandalwood Forest, Deer Park, Herbal Garden, Volcanic Mud Flow of Mount Popa, Stone Forest and Fossil Museum.
