North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended a nighttime ceremony to inaugurate a new district of the capital Pyongyang on Sunday. The new street of apartment blocks, called Hwasong district, is in a suburb of Pyongyang close to the building where the bodies of the country's former leaders Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il are preserved.
North Korea's government has tried to build more apartment blocks in Pyongyang for many years.Since Kim Jong Un took over the country in late 2011, two districts of central Pyongyang were cleared, and rebuilt. In more recent years, suburban areas have been redeveloped. These official construction projects are similar to massive new streets of housing built in the 1980s and 1990s.
