North Korea has tested a "new-type tactical guided weapon," its state news agency KCNA reported on Sunday. The brief report did not mention the date and location of the test, but said that leader Kim Jong Un was there to observe the test firing.
Still images published by KCNA on its website have not been independently verified, but show the launch of one or more rockets from a mobile launch platform with what appears to be a coastline and sea in the background of one image, and dust and smoke rising from a small island in another image.
The new weapon system "is of great significance in drastically improving the firepower of the frontline long-range artillery units and enhancing the efficiency in the operation of tactical nukes of the North Korea and diversification of their firepower missions," the Korean Central News Agency report said.
