Myanmar Women’s Day in Yangon: Aiming at gender equality and prevention of violence

Organized by the Yangon Region Government Yangon Region Committee for Women’s Affairs, the Myanmar Women's Day celebration was held at the Mingalar Hall of the Yangon Region Government on Monday.

Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein and wife, Commander of Yangon Command and wife, Chief Justice of Yangon Region High Court, region ministers and their wives, committee members, invited guests, outstanding students and entertainment groups attended the ceremony.

At the ceremony, the Chief Minister gave an opening speech, saying that National Strategic Plan for the Advancement of Women (NSPAW) phase 2 (2023-2032) continues to be implemented for women's empowerment, promotion of capacity building, gender equality, and prevention of violence. With the aims for women to have professional skills, gain knowledge before stepping into the workplace and to avoid and prevent violence in various forms, more vocational training courses are needed to open with the cooperation of the regions/districts/townships level women's committees and organizations. 

Secretary, YRCWA, Thein Thein Myint said "The purpose of celebrating Myanmar Women's Day annually is for women to have gender equalities, enabling to stay updated on latest information and knowledge and boost their own capabilities. A collective tree-planting ceremony commemorating Myanmar’s Women Day was held at Hlawga National Park on Sunday. On the afternoon of 3rd July, a literary talk will be held with the participation of author Ma Sandar, Myinmu Maung Naing Moe and Phyu Phyu-U (Lady Diamond) to share the knowledge for the comprehensive empowerment of women."

Cash awards and certificates of honor were awarded to 4 outstanding students who were included in the top-10 list of the whole country for 2023 matriculation examination, 7 outstanding women athletes from the 32nd Southeast Asian Games and 1 from the 12th Southeast Asian Para Games from Yangon Region respectively.

Essay Competition 3rd Prize Winner, B.E.H.S (2) Thanlyin, Phyu Phyu Kyi said "For this competition, I tried hard and studied books, articles and papers about Women's Day from Information and Public Relation Department (Thanlyin). My essay is about the ways how can we provide assistance to women from all aspects, such as health, economic, education and for better lives for women in order not to be victims of violence. This is the 1st time of winning regional level prize."

In addition, educative talk related to Gender, Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), UNSR-132, National Strategic Plan for the Advancement of Women (NSPAW) in Yangon Region have been conducted 18 times in basic education schools in districts and townships at Yangon Region this year.
