Myanmar-Thailand Cooperation: Joint Statement on the President's Official Visit

Myanmar and Thailand on Thursday issued a Joint Statement on the occasion of Official Visit of the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar to the Kingdom of Thailand. It stated that President U Min Aung Hlaing paid an Official Visit to Thailand from 6 to 7 August 2026 at the invitation of Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister of Thailand.

During the visit, the two leaders held warm and cordial bilateral discussion. They underscored with great satisfaction the longstanding ties of friendship, cooperation, and good neighbourliness between Myanmar and Thailand, and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening cooperation in all areas of mutual interest, for the shared prosperity and advancement of the two countries and the region.

The two leaders stressed the importance of further strengthening and deepening bilateral cooperation in the areas of political and security, economic, environmental issues, socio-cultural measures, regional level collaboration and other matters. Both sides agreed to increase high-level exchanges, strengthen cooperation between their foreign ministries, and enhance defence and border security collaboration.

They also agreed to step up joint efforts against transnational crimes, including online scams, money laundering and drug trafficking. In the economic sector, the two countries reaffirmed their goal of reaching 12 billion US dollar in bilateral trade. They agreed to improve cross-border trade, strengthen transport and infrastructure connectivity, support energy cooperation, and promote investment.

They also welcomed new agreements on labour cooperation and the Myanmar–Thailand Business Forum. The leaders agreed to work together on environmental issues such as haze pollution, forest fire prevention and water quality management. They also committed to expanding cooperation in tourism, education, health, agriculture, disaster management and space technology.

At the regional level, Myanmar and Thailand reaffirmed their commitment to work closely through ASEAN, ACMECS, BIMSTEC and other regional mechanisms. Thailand also reiterated its support for Myanmar's participation in ASEAN and its ACMECS Chairmanship.

Thailand welcomed Myanmar's continued efforts to advance its peace process through a Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led approach and expressed its support in close consultation with Myanmar. The official visit of President U Min Aung Hlaing reaffirmed the long-standing friendship and close partnership between Myanmar and Thailand and the shared commitment of both countries to further strengthen cooperation for the mutual benefit of the two countries.

Both sides agreed to continue close engagement at all levels. The President expressed his sincere appreciation to the Royal Thai Government for the warm hospitality extended to him and his delegation during the visit, and extended a cordial invitation to the Prime Minister of Thailand to visit Myanmarat a mutually convenient time.
