Mexico seeks to extend trade agreement with US and Canada beyond 2036

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Friday that her country, alongside Canada, wants to extend the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) for another 16 years. But the US declined a clean renewal during the first mandatory joint review on July 1, 2026.

Instead, the trade pact remains in effect, shifting to a 10-year countdown with mandatory annual reviews until it reaches its final expiration date on July 1, 2036. The current USMCA framework continues to exempt roughly 85% of Mexican exports to the U.S. from broad new baseline tariffs, keeping current effective tariff treatments stable.
