Mexicans lit up marijuana cigarettes and bongs outside the country's Senate building on Thursday. It came while lawmakers inside moved toward approving a bill to fully legalize marijuana. The measure is expected to pass the full Senate in the next few days, and move to the lower chamber where it will likely pass as well.

The measure marks a step toward changing the country's approach to the drug by removing it as a source of income for violent drug gangs. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has expressed openness to medical marijuana use. According to local media, the bill will legalize possession of 28 grams of marijuana and authorize the growth of marijuana plants with restrictions.
