Meeting with Hluttaw Committee: Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker met with Hluttaw Committee

Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw U Khin Yi, accompanied by Deputy Speaker U Maung Maung Ohn and responsible officials from the Pyithu Hluttaw office, met with members of the Committee on Domestic and Foreign Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs/INGOs) at the Hluttaw Affairs Building (I-12), on Tuesday.

First, the committee chairperson, secretary, and members individually introduced themselves. Then, Committee Chairperson U Thet Pone, presented an explanation of the committee's duties and responsibilities, as well as future plans and measures to be undertaken. Following this, the Deputy Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw delivered the remarks.

Subsequently, the Speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw stated that there are currently 3,666 domestic non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and 45 international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) operating in Myanmar. He noted that NGOs and INGOs are organizations that assist the state in various ways for national development, humanitarian assistance, and food security. He emphasized that the Hluttaw, from its perspective, must review the activities of these organizations from a legal standpoint and facilitate their work in a manner beneficial to the country.

He further pointed out that since there is currently no specific legislation governing NGOs and INGOs, he called for discussions on whether it would be appropriate to enact laws such as the NGO/INGO Management Law, Foreign Assistance Transparency Law, Volunteer Service Law, Data Protection Law, Public Benefit Organization Law, and Humanitarian Coordination Law. After the meeting, the Pyithu Hluttaw Speaker personally and cordially greeted the committee chairperson, secretary, and each of the committee members, it’s reported.
