China on Friday reported over 1,000 cases of the coronavirus in the northeastern province of Jilin as the country is battling its worst outbreak in two years. The Chinese mainland on Thursday reported 1,301 locally transmitted COVID-19 cases, down from 2,010 on Wednesday. Earlier this month, health authorities reported two COVID-19 deaths, the first since January 2021. The deaths were both in Jilin province. The city of Jilin continues mass testing of its residents.

Local authorities Thursday completed construction of a 400,000-square-meter quarantine facility in Changchun, the largest in the city, according to state broadcaster CCTV. On Friday, provincial officials said they would ramp up measures to prevent infection and the spread of COVID-19 outside the province.
