The 9th meeting of the Legal Translation Commission’s Working Committee and Working Bodies was held on Monday at the Ministry of Legal Affairs.
During the meeting, Commission Chairperson Dr. Thida Oo said the Legal Translation Commission Law was enacted by Pyidaungsu Hluttaw as Law No. 25 in 2015. The laws enacted by the Indian Parliament until Myanmar pre-independence era in 1947 were followed in Myanmar, and the Legal Translation Commission Law was promulgated to translate 81 existing laws from English into Myanmar and the commission was formed in 2016.
The translation work of the commission is separate from the translation work of the regular laws of the Union Attorney General Office. The State Administration Council reorganized the Legal Translation Commission on March 2 with 15 experts. The 8th meeting was held on May 20 and 21 and discussed the Land Customs Act and the Negotiable Instruments Act.
The commission chairperson also appreciated the efforts of working committees, working bodies and commission members and urged them to work together in translating the laws without any delays. She also said that of 81 laws, the commission has translated 26 laws so far and published the books from No 1 to 8. Twelve laws are translated by the working bodies led by the working committee members and there are only 38 laws for the Legal Translation Commission to translate. She also sought suggestions regarding the approval of the Legal Representative Suits Act and the Arbitration (Protocol and Convention) Act during this meeting.
