The majestic Kanbawzathadi Palace was built by King Bayintnaung in 915 ME (1553 AD) in Hanthawaddy.

The palace was destroyed by fire during the reign of King Nanda and it was left in debris for over 400 years. So, the Department of Archaeology conducted research and excavated the palace from 1990 to 1997.

When the excavation of Royal Palace or Myaynan Pyathad   conducted on 13 December 1993, the plinth backs of Myaynan Pyathad , Sanu building , Letwewin and Letyawin buildings  were discovered. The donor names were also curved on some of the teak structures of the plinth backs. Based on the research and the discovered plinth backs, the buildings were renovated to look like the original buildings.

At present, the Kanbawzathadi palace sees many local and foreign visitors who are interested in the ancient heritages. Moreover, the visitors can also explore the utensils and tools used by the ancient Kings, ancient Buddha statues and tools displayed at the Hanthawaddy Archaeology Museum and Bamarathana throne hall.
