

Continuing heavy rain in northeastern Japan is causing extensive flooding and raising risks of landslides. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the rain front, fueled by warm, moist air is deluging the Sea of Japan coast in the region.
Developing rain clouds were covering Akita and Iwate prefectures on Sunday morning. The authorities have issued a landslide alert to part of Akita, Iwate and Yamagata prefectures due to increased risk. Weather officials say that even after rain weakens or stops, overflowing water from smaller rivers will converge into a large river, threatening to inflict damage to the region over the long haul.
Rain is expected to continue in northeastern Japan. The regions will get up to 60 millimeters of rain during the 24-hour period through Monday noon. Weather officials are warning against flooding in low-lying areas, overflowing rivers and landslides.
