International Women’s Day: “Gender Equality Today For A Sustainable Tomorrow”

Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement celebrated the International Women’s Day for 2022 falling on the 8th of March.

The celebration was attended by member of the State Administration Council Daw Aye Nu Sein, Union Minister for Legal Affairs Union Attorney General Dr. Thida Oo, Chairperson of the Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs and Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr. Thet Thet Khine and many other concerned officials.

The Ceremony began with the video message sent by Chairman of the State Administration Council Prime Minister Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. The theme for this 2022 International Women’s Day is “Gender Equality Today For A Sustainable Tomorrow”.

In her remarks, Union Minister Dr. Thet Thet Khine stressed the National Strategic Plan for the Advancement of Women – NSPAW 2013-2022 based on the UN’s Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women and Beijing declaration, plans for the Phase II of the NSPAW, implementation of the national-level project for prevention of sexual exploitation against women in conflicts since November of 2021, operation of 24-hour helpline services for women since 2016, cash assistance for the court hearing and livelihood to victims, operation of 6 One-Stop Women Support Centre-OSWSCs in Yangon, Mandalay, Mawlamyine, Lashio, Loikaw and Monywa and opening of the domestic vocational training schools.

She continued to say that Myanmar, which is a member of the UNCEDAW, has formed a committee to work on submitting the sixth report on the implementation of tasks for eliminating discrimination against women.

The ministry is participating in reviewing the ASEAN Regional Plan of Action on the Elimination of Violence against Women - RPAEVAW while working together with the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children.

The Union Minister pledged that no one would be left behind in the post-COVID-19 recovery as the ministry is implementing the tasks for the development of the women. The ceremony came to an end with the message from the UN Secretary-General read by Director-General of the Social Welfare Department Dr. San San Aye.
