Myanmar National Human Rights Commission issued a statement commemorated the 76th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10th December.

The Statement said that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which outlines human rights and fundamental freedoms for all human beings, was adopted by the United Nations on 10 December 1948. Today marks the 76th anniversary of that declaration, celebrated as International Human Rights Day.

Since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, countries around the world have made efforts to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of their citizens. Myanmar, not only supported the adoption of the Declaration but also incorporated the human rights standards from the Declaration into the State Constitution and domestic laws.

Additionally, Myanmar is a party to several core international human rights treaties, including the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its two optional protocols, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

In 2024, the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) carried out activities to promote and protect human rights in accordance with its legal mandate. The Commission successfully organized 63 human rights awareness talks and lectures, reaching a total of 8,391 participants. It also screened 214 complaints related to human rights violations. Inspection visits were conducted at 10 prisons, 12 labour camps, 18 police detention centers, 15 court detention centers, 10 homes for the aged, 3 women’s vocational training schools, 1 school for children with disabilities, and 5 youth training schools. Following these inspections, the Commission sent 293 recommendations regarding human rights protection to the relevant ministries and organizations.

Additionally, the MNHRC provided six legal opinions on human rights issues related to existing and proposed domestic laws. It also translated and published the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

The Commission participated in 28 international and regional meetings on human rights. Moreover, the Commission also issued 12 public statements and released 103 news items about its activities. The theme laid down by the United Nations for the 76th International Human Rights Day in 2024 is "Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now."

In honor of the International Human Rights Day, the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission urges everyone to create a brighter future for all by respecting and practicing human rights while building a peaceful, stable, socioeconomically developed, pleasant and prosperous nation where the rule of law prevails.
