International Day of Forests: Commemorative event in Nay Pyi Taw

A ceremony to commemorate the 2025 International Day of Forests was held on 21st March at the Department of Forest in Nay Pyi Taw with the attendance of Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi.

The theme of 2025 International Day of Forest is “Forest and Food”. In his opening speech, the Union Minister stressed on global food security and nutrition crisis due to the impacts of severe climate change, pandemic, conflicts and natural disasters occurred across the world.

According to the statement issued by FAO, about 733 million population across the world are struggling with chronic hunger and around 815 million people are undernourished. Since food sufficiency and manufacturing rely on balanced ecosystem and stable climate condition, international countries are emphasizing on preserving forest ecosystem, heart of all ecosystems.

In Myanmar, systematic forest preservation measures are conducted to ensure long-term resilience of valuable resources and sustainable development of the nation. As Watershed of Myanmar covers over 80 percent of total country area, efforts are made to accelerate watershed area and mangroves preservation and restoration.

Likewise, forest plantations and firewood plantations are expanded to stabilize the climate. The Union Minister called for the concerted efforts of every citizen to participate in forest preservation measures understanding the values of trees and forests. It was follwed by Keynote Presentation of International Day of Forests and screening of commemorative video clip.

Then, the Union Minister made a tour to dsipalyed commemorative posters. The ceremony also included research paper reading and sector-wise discussions.
