








The commemorative event for the 2025 International Day for the Conservation of Mangrove Ecosystems was held at the Forest Department’s Ingyin Hall in Nay Pyi Taw in the morning on July 25.
The ceremony was attended by Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, U Khin Maung Yi, Deputy Minister U Min Thu, Departmental officials, Representatives from related ministries and organizations, Researchers and invited guests.
In his opening address, Union Minister U Khin Maung Yi highlighted that Myanmar ranks as the 7th country with the largest mangrove coverage in the world, possessing 1.26 million acres of mangrove forests. The country’s mangrove ecosystems consist of two main types such as delta mangroves and coastal mangroves, which play a vital role in food security and sustainable development. To ensure the long-term preservation of mangroves and socio-economic progress, the government has been expanding marine national parks and protected natural areas, establishing mangrove buffer zones and conservation forests, developing mangrove plantations, restoring degraded mangrove ecosystems. He called for collaboration among relevant departments, organizations, and the public to protect and sustainably manage these crucial ecosystems.
Director-General of the Forest Department, Dr. Thaung Naing Oo, conducted a keynote presentation on the significance of mangrove conservation, followed by the screening of a commemorative video.
The Union Minister and attendees toured an exhibition of posters showcasing global and national efforts in mangrove conservation, with officials providing detailed explanations. The event also featured the presentations and discussions on mangrove development and governance, the role of ecosystems in sustainable water resource management and strategies for mangrove protection and restoration and group workshops to explore actionable solutions.
