Inspecting Conditions of the Dams: NPT Council Chair inspected conditions of the dams

Chairman of Nay Pyi Taw Council, Chairman of Nay Pyi Taw Development Committee, and Mayor U Kan Myint Than, together with relevant officials, inspected the water inflow into dams currently used for drinking water and domestic purposes during the rainy season, as well as the structural integrity of the dam embankments, on the morning of August 9.

First, the Mayor and officials arrived at the Ottarathiri Dam. Relevant officials explained the emergency response measures taken to prevent the dam from reaching a critical condition after the discharge pipe cracked and downstream seepage occurred on 5th June, 2026, due to the Mandalay earthquake and subsequent aftershocks.

They reported that the remedial work had been completed 100 percent and that the dam embankment was now structurally sound. They also presented the current situation, noting that since the fourth week of July, the reservoir had reached full capacity and that approximately six inches of excess water had been flowing over the spillway.

The Mayor instructed that, as this is a repaired dam, the condition of the earth embankment must be continuously monitored and that relevant departments must collaborate to ensure proper water flow along the spillway channels. Subsequently, the Mayor and officials inspected the Chaungmagyi Dam.

Officials there reported on the completion of repairs to earthquake-related damage and the measures taken to prevent erosion at the newly placed earth embankment sections. The Mayor emphasized that, given the Chaungmagyi Dam's current critical role in supplying water to Nay Pyi Taw, its structural integrity must be systematically checked according to inspection protocols.

Although the water level has not yet reached the full supply level, the spillway and water channels must be kept clear. He also stressed that, as this dam supplies drinking water, special attention must be paid to its security. Afterward, they inspected the President Office’s multi-purpose livestock and crop farm, located on 22 acres near the Chaungmagyi Dam.

This farm is being jointly implemented by the Nay Pyi Taw Development Committee and relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, the Ministry of Construction, and the Ministry of Electricity and Energy. They reviewed the breeding of layer chickens, broiler chickens, and fattening pigs, as well as fish farming at the check dam, and provided necessary coordination and instructions.
